Below is a small selection of the most common problems I work with. I’ll explain a bit about how I often approach each issue, although please don’t consider this a set programme that your sessions must follow. What we do in each session is very dependent on you and your goals, so if you want to do things differently to how I’ve mentioned here, we probably can!
Weight loss
Hypnotherapy can achieve fantastic results for weight loss. I do recommend at least 2 or 3 sessions, although this isn’t essential. We’ll spend some time talking about your current eating habits, lifestyle and exercise levels, as well as any health issues or emotional factors that might affect you. We identify some ways for you to improve your diet or exercise regime – then hypnotherapy makes it easier for to make those changes. For example, clients often say that they haven’t enough energy in the evenings to do exercise, but after having hypnosis, they report feeling much more energetic and motivated. By working on a subconscious level, we can also make certain foods, such as fruit and vegetables, seem more appetising and fulfilling to you. I’ll also help you create a positive image of yourself, so that you can visualise yourself at the size you’d like to be.
What I don’t do in hypnotherapy is tell you to deprive yourself of food, and I won’t try to ‘put you off’ a particular food unless you specifically ask me to. (In other words – occasionally clients do want to give up something specific, and we can do that, but it’s not part of my usual weight-management approach.)
Phobias
We can tackle phobias in a number of ways. If your phobia is of a physical object or creature, you can use your imagination to change something about the way it looks, sounds or feels, making it seem funny or even pleasant (hypnosis makes this much easier to do).
You may also have heard of ‘fast phobia release,’ an NLP technique. This involves visualising yourself in the moments just before your phobia kicks in, and then changing something about what happens next. You might imagine watching yourself on a TV screen, or change the order that things happen in, perhaps running the scene backwards.
Phobias can often be cured in just one session, though stubborn ones can take slightly longer. If your fear stems from a particular event, we can use hypnosis to change how you now feel about what happened. Regression may be useful if you don’t remember the original cause.
Smoking
I offer Quit4Life Therapy for smokers. This tends to need just one session, and uses a cognitive approach to hypnotherapy. I focus on the benefits of stopping smoking and how well you will feel as a result, rather than using any unpleasant aversion techniques. You get a CD to take home and learn techniques in self-hypnosis to help you stay a non-smoker. Find out more here.
Driving test/ Interview / Exam nerves
Often will need just one session, though you might consider more if it helps you feel even more confident, or if your nerves are linked to broader issues of anxiety / self-esteem.
I’ll ask you to say a bit about how it feels when you get nervous in the test/interview situation, and we’ll think about how you would like to feel instead. For example, some people describe wanting to feel more grounded or present in their body. Others say they’d like to pretend the examiner isn’t there. We’ll then do some relaxing hypnosis work, and ‘programme’ your unconscious mind to focus on how you want to feel. And, you can mentally rehearse your exam / interview, and imagine it going perfectly. The reason that we do this is to replace any negative expectations you might have, with something more positive. As Henry Ford, founder of the motor company, famously said, “whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right!”

The feeling of something being missing or wanting to understand yourself better
This is something that often attracts people to past life regression. Many of my clients say they have long-standing feelings of something not being quite ‘right,’ or as if a piece of the puzzle is missing. There are any number of possible reasons for this, but often regression – whether to a past life or to childhood events – helps people find the missing piece.
